Time For a Change?

Updated: Jan 17

If you’ve been prioritising ‘doing everything’ over efficiency, I encourage you to consider if it’s time for a change.

Sitting at your desk all day, doesn't create value for your business if you are focusing your attention on the wrong tasks. Working more doesn’t always equate to greater output. Ask the companies implementing 4-day work weeks because employee productivity has increased – it’s all about using working hours more effectively.

Take a moment to think about how many hours you spend on average doing the following:

  • Dealing with routine admin

  • Answering/responding to initial enquiries

  • Chasing-up people to book appointments

  • Spending more time than necessary on social media management

  • Wasting time struggle to produce marketing content

  • Get distracted by organisational tasks

There are plenty more low-level jobs that divert your time and attention. What’s the real cost to your business doing routine tasks that can be easily handled by someone else? If you’re working flat-out and making no headway, replace that endless to-do list with a system that helps you make progress.

Hiring a virtual assistant (VA) can be a great way for small business owners to reclaim the chance to focus on what really matters. Handover day-to-day tasks to regain valuable time and attention for the areas that really grow your business. You can stop juggling and actually get stuff done. You will get through your day feeling more productive and less stressed. Plus, the more focused your attention, the quicker you will blast through the jobs – and do them well.

More and more businesses are implementing productivity-based strategies, moving away from simply measuring how long is spent ‘at work’, to focusing on actual output. Productivity is about getting the most important things done in the most efficient way. When you think of productivity that way, multitasking doesn’t fit. Research shows that if you’re doing two things at once, your productivity decreases by as much as 40 percent. Plus, it takes about a third longer to complete both tasks, and your number of errors will double.

Delegating makes business sense. Maybe you’ve hesitated before now because you’re trying to save costs, or you’re concerned about delegation thinking other people won’t do jobs to the same standard as you would. But the truth is this approach is unsustainable, causing you to waste time, and moreover is not the best use of your expertise.

If you’re thinking, “easier said than done,” you’re not alone. Small business owners having trouble finding time to eat lunch or squeeze in an extra meeting, may feel it’s easier to just keep going it alone. But they are actually signals that you need extra help. Unlike a permanent employee, it is quick and simple to onboard a VA. They are experienced working with busy small business owners so used to getting up to speed quickly and using their initiative.

Working with a VA you will see it is possible for a person to have an overwhelming number of things to do and still function productively with a clear head and a sense of control! And if you don’t recall when you felt up to date in your daily tasks, chances are it’s time to rethink the way you work.
